Meet Our Members

Behind every membership is a real story. Here are a few of the neighbors whose lives are enriched by the Gramatan Village community every day.

Selma Fishman
Yoga Dining Out Active Living

Selma Fishman

About a year ago, Selma made the thoughtful decision to give up driving. “I am a bit frail now,” she says simply — but that hasn’t slowed her down one bit.

With the help of Gramatan Village, Selma is out and about on a regular basis. Volunteer drivers help her get to the places she loves, and her membership keeps her connected to the community she calls home.

An avid yoga practitioner and lover of dining out, Selma is proof that giving up the car keys doesn’t have to mean giving up your lifestyle.

“Gramatan Village keeps me going — out to yoga, out to dinner, out in the world.”

Mary Jane Vanderburg
Transportation Community Independence

Mary Jane Vanderburg

Mary Jane lives on her own, and like many members, she values both her independence and the reassurance of knowing support is always available when she needs it.

She finds the transportation services her membership provides to be especially helpful — getting her where she needs to go safely and reliably, without having to depend on family or navigate the logistics alone.

For Mary Jane, Gramatan Village isn’t just a service — it’s the comfort of belonging to a community that looks out for its own.

“The transportation services make such a difference. I can get where I need to go without worrying.”

Don Deixel
Bronxville Roots Aging at Home Peace of Mind

Don Deixel

Don doesn’t consider himself needy. He’s independent, capable, and has managed just fine on his own for many years. But he’s also practical enough to recognize the value of a safety net.

He joined Gramatan Village for the peace of mind it brings — knowing that if he ever finds himself without somewhere to turn, there’s a trusted community ready to help.

Most of all, Don likes knowing that his membership is helping him stay right where he wants to be: in Bronxville, in his own home, on his own terms.

“I like knowing that Gramatan Village is there — a safety net that helps me stay right where I want to be.”

Barbara White
Educator Community Volunteer Giving Back

Barbara White

A retired local teacher, Barbara has always believed in giving back to her community. She joined Gramatan Village long before she thought she’d ever need any help — simply because she wanted to support something meaningful in Bronxville.

Then life intervened. A knee replacement surgery left her recovering at home, and she found herself needing a ride to a doctor’s appointment in the city on short notice.

Gramatan Village came through without hesitation. A volunteer was there when she needed it most, a reminder of why she had joined in the first place — and why membership matters long before you think you’ll ever use it.

“I joined to give back. Then I needed help myself — and GV was there. That’s what community really means.”
